Frequently asked questions
What ChordPro Studio does, who it's for, and how it compares to other options.
What is ChordPro Studio?
ChordPro Studio is a web app that turns an audio recording or a chord sheet PDF into a chord chart. Upload an MP3/WAV file, or a PDF chord sheet you already have (like one downloaded from Ultimate Guitar), and it uses AI to transcribe the lyrics, detect the chords, and generate a ChordPro (.pro) file you can edit, download, and share.
Who is ChordPro Studio for?
Musicians, worship teams, bands, and people running open mics or jam sessions who want a chord chart for a song and a way to share the file. If they already have a .pro file, it can be uploaded and shared as is. If they only have an audio recording or a PDF chord sheet, instead of building one from scratch by hand, a .pro file can be generated from it and then edited. It's also useful for anyone who wants to run a Jam Session, live band rehearsal, or performance with synced charts on every phone.
How accurate is the AI chord and lyric detection?
It is a starting point, not a finished product. Audio-to-chord and audio-to-lyric transcription is inherently imperfect, especially on dense mixes, so treat the output as a rough first draft to correct in the built-in editor rather than a final chart. PDF chord-sheet transcription tends to be more reliable, since the chords and lyrics are already written down rather than inferred by ear. One caveat: on a small number of very well-known commercial songs, the AI may decline to reproduce the lyrics at all due to copyright safeguards built into the AI provider itself — if that happens you'll see a clear message explaining why, rather than a broken or blank result.
What is ChordPro format, and why does the app use it?
ChordPro is a widely adopted, plain-text format for writing lyrics with chord symbols embedded inline (e.g. "[G]As the son of a son of a sailor"). Because it is plain text, ChordPro files are supported by a large ecosystem of other apps, editors, and songbook tools, so a .pro file exported from ChordPro Studio is not locked to this one app.
What file formats can I upload, and what do I get back?
Upload MP3 or WAV audio, or a chord sheet PDF you already have. You get back an editable ChordPro chart in-app, which you can download as a .pro plain-text file.
What is a Jam Session?
Jam Sessions broadcast a chord chart in real time to a band during a jam, rehearsal, or gig. The host starts a session and shares a link or QR code; guests join in any browser with no app install and no account required. The host controls which song and section is showing, and the chart auto-scrolls in sync on every connected device. Each musician can set their own capo/transpose independently without affecting anyone else in the session.
Do I need an account to join a Jam Session?
No. Only the host needs a ChordPro Studio account to start a session. Guests just open the shared link or scan the QR code in a browser.
What are Bands, and how is scheduling handled?
A Band is a roster of the people you actually play with, each with a role (guitar, vocals, drums, etc.). The band owner can schedule rehearsals and gigs with a date, time, and location; every band member gets invited and can RSVP, so you know who’s actually coming instead of guessing from a group chat. Members can also mark their own blockout dates, which show up when you’re picking a date, and any band member can attach songs from their own library as the setlist for an event. Band members get a simple phone-first view of the schedule, RSVPs, blockout dates, and read-only setlists. Creating and owning a band requires a Pro plan; accepting an invite and participating in a band does not.
Is there a community library of chord charts?
Yes. Users can upload and share their own ChordPro files to a shared community library, and browse or download charts other musicians have contributed.
How much does ChordPro Studio cost?
ChordPro Studio is free to sign up and use, with a limited number of songs per month. Paid Basic and Pro plans raise that monthly limit and unlock downloading and jamming with Community-uploaded songs. Current pricing is shown on the Subscription page in the app.
How is ChordPro Studio different from a tab/chord site like Ultimate Guitar?
Tab sites rely on other people having already transcribed and uploaded a chart for the exact song you want. ChordPro Studio instead generates a chart directly from your own audio recording, or from a PDF chord sheet you already downloaded — even from Ultimate Guitar itself — so it works even for a song, cover, or original that nobody else has charted, and turns a static printout into a real, editable .pro file. It also adds real-time band sync (Jam Sessions) that a static tab page does not offer.
Who makes ChordPro Studio?
ChordPro Studio is developed by GrayPenguin Development.
